Mac Ice, Candidate for Secretary
As a member of the Executive Board, how do you see the secretary supporting the Academy’s strategic plan?
I have served as Secretary to the Board, and as an Associate Editor, of a scholarly journal since 2016. My experience there has impressed upon me the vital role of service that a secretary provides for Boards such as ours. The duties of keeping meeting minutes may sound routine, and it is, but the creation and maintenance of these records facilitates the work of the Board in critical ways. First it ensures transparency through accurate record-generation and record-keeping. Further, it serves as a check against faulty human memory. Further, with each new Board and slate of officers, the work of the Secretaries accrue over time to provide continuity from term to term. Further, it ensures the preservation of information for future use, whether that is by the board, its constituency, or by outside researchers. As a whole, the Board is charged with leadership, oversight and ensuring their vision for ACA is implemented. The secretary serves the Board by facilitating its scheduled and called meetings, by documenting its activities, and by ensuring that transparent record-keeping is not an after-thought but an intentional activity.
